About Us
The main objectives of our department include the research of Eastern languages, literatures and cultures with scientific methods and their promotion in an academic context. In this context, while analysing the literary works, movements and theoretical approaches of the Eastern world in depth, it is aimed to deal with all components of the relevant languages in a broad framework. Our department aims to provide a comprehensive education that includes fields such as literary text analysis, linguistics, translation studies, language-culture relations, critical theories and cultural studies.
Our department aims to train competent, well-equipped and qualified specialists in the fields of scientific research and application by developing teaching methods in the field of Oriental languages. In this direction, it aims to contribute to meeting the qualified human resources needed by our country. In addition, students are encouraged to analyse the linguistic and cultural structures of Eastern countries from an academic point of view, so that they can better understand the relevant countries and develop contemporary and sustainable solutions.
Our department prioritises providing students with analytical, comparative and critical thinking skills so that they can grow up as inquisitive individuals. In this context, it is among our main goals to encourage the production of knowledge based on scientific and universal values and to make a qualified contribution to the scientific, cultural and social development of our country through the sharing of the knowledge produced.
History
The proposal of the Rectorate of Iğdır University to open departments and majors within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences was examined at the higher education executive meeting dated 16.06.2011 and it was deemed appropriate to open a Department of Oriental Languages and Literatures within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences in accordance with Article 7/d-2 of the Law No. 2547 amended by the Law No. 2880.
Career Fields
Students who graduate from the Eastern Languages and Literatures programmes are given the title of philologist. Graduates can work in universities, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, State Archives, libraries, museums, customs, embassies, consulates, press and media organisations and banks. In addition, they can also find the opportunity to work in tourism agencies and private sector as translator-interpreter. Students who take pedagogical formation have the opportunity to work as a teacher within the Ministry of National Education.
